Israel Galván and Akram Khan
World Premiere: 2 June 2014, MC2: Grenoble (France) Spanish Premiere: 27 June 2014, XXXI Festival de Otoño a Primavera, Madrid UK Premiere: 3 November 2014, Sadler's Wells Theatre, London
With this new artistic exchange, Akram Khan and Israel Galván have brought together kathak and flamenco to create something altogether distinct, defying classification or genre.
TOROBAKA takes its name from a Maori-inspired phonetic poem by Tristan Tzara. The bull (toro) and the cow (vaca) are sacred animals in the dancers' two traditions and represent the coming together of dance styles. Rather than mimicking one another, Galván and Khan seek to create something new by better understanding each other's approaches to their craft.
